Making Strides

Hello!

All classes are keeping busy as usually! So, here is what we have been doing:

6th Grade-
They have been learning about the narrator's point of view, first person or third person as well as a character's traits whether it is appearance or personality. They recently paired up to create a short story and create a character. The stories were either from the first person point of view, using the pronoun "I", or the third person point of view, using the pronouns he or she. Based off the character's appearance in the story the pairs had to draw their character. Each group read their story and presented their character to the class. They all did very well and there was a lot of creativity!

We recently read a story about a hero. So, for tomorrow they will be doing a little research on a historical hero using the Internet. I made a packet of questions and such for them to fill out. We will present these heroes on Monday. Feel free to e-mail me with any questions! (Tomorrow I will be gone.)
 Kudos:
The 6th grade deserve huge kudos! They have been making awesome strides in my class with their writing and grammar. There was an assignment this week about imagery. They were suppose to write two paragraphs of imagery on an event/place. The majority of them wrote three or MORE paragraphs. Many are going above and beyond in their writing and it is AWESOME!!!! :)

7th Grade-
This class is in stride with the sixth in that they are learning about a narrator's point of view. However, we are digging deeper by learning about first, second, and third person point of view as well as a character's traits. They made a wanted person about a fictional character. They were to write the information about the person in third person point of view, using the pronouns he or she, and draw the person giving them unique character traits. They presented them in class. The wanted posters were very interesting and full of different appearances!

Today they read about a hero, Martin Luther King, JR. After read a short text about an encounter with him students were to research more about him. They were to write down his characteristic traits, why he was a hero, and a modern day hero. Tomorrow they will continue with the hero theme and research a historical hero that was assigned to them in class. They will be making a hero pamphlet to present to the class on Monday. I am very excited to see these pamphlets!!

8th Grade:

These ladies have a very exciting field trip planned for tomorrow, the 26th. They will be going to the St. Thomas Moore Center in Panora for a leadership course. They will do many activities that teach them to work as a team to get things done. They should wear jeans, tennis shoes, and bring a sack lunch. We will leave at 8:30 and be back around 2:30.

The girls have been learning about a character's traits, point of view of a narrator, making inferences about a story, comparing and contrasting central characters, and deciding what motivates a character to make the actions they do in a story. We have been creating and filling in charts to help us with inference and a character's motivation. They read two poems, "Medusa" and "The River God" in which they had to compare and contrast the two central characters and explain the purpose of each poem. They also did an activity with popular advertisements. They each had an advertisement picture and were to make an inference as to what the advertisement meant. This was a little difficult but they worked together and made the correct inferences.

As for art. Yesterday they each got a paper with a piece of a tree on it. They were to color the tree brown. Then I read the meaning of colors and how they describe a person's personality. If the personality fit the girl then she was to color her background that color. When they are all done I can piece the papers together to make a tree representing how each individual tree branch together makes a big strong tree.

This is our last weekend of September so enjoy the beautiful weather!
